Blue Suede Shoes Excerpt 12

He knew the man had a gun, and he wasn’t sure of their positions, so he couldn’t risk revealing himself at this point. He had to wait for Jason. He just hoped the woman in the next room would be alive that long.

He heard the man deliver another blow, and he couldn’t stand it anymore. Rising from his crouched position, he poised himself to leap into the doorway, his gun in his hand and the safety off. That was when stars exploded behind his eyes.

Blue Suede Shoes: Excerpt 11

“I’m sure he’ll appreciate your visit,” Hunter said. As the doors opened, he caught her by the hand before she could step onto the elevator. “Hey, do you think we could have coffee again sometime? Or maybe even dinner?”
“Well, yes, I would like that very much,” Clarissa said, doing a mental jig of excitement while remaining nonplussed on the outside. She smiled at him and he released her hand.
“Okay, well I would need your number,” Hunter called out as the doors started to close.
Clarissa punched the button to hold the doors for a second.
“You can get it from Ryan,” she said flippantly, wondering why he frowned just before the doors slid shut again.

Blue Suede Shoes: Excerpt 10

She seated herself and enjoyed the croissant and her scrambled egg whites. Eliza knew just how she liked things. After almost 18 years, Eliza could anticipate nearly her every move. She hadn’t asked for the breakfast, but Eliza just knew she would want something light after her swim.
When she reached her room 20 minutes later, she saw she had two messages on her phone. Clarissa started the shower and hit the speakerphone button, listening as she peeled off her wet swimsuit. Ryan’s voice poured out with excitement, his message upbeat and full of hope for little Scotty Martinez. She smiled, deleted the message and made a mental note to call him back later. Her hand froze on the phone when she heard the strange voice as the next message played automatically.
“Jessica…” the single word reminded her of a terrorizing scene from Silence of the Lambs. The heavy breathing paralyzed her, sending her mind spiraling back into her nightmares. It’s not possible. How could he find me? Twin snakes of fear twisted in her belly and sent chills racing over her naked body. When Eliza found her half an hour later, she was still clutching the phone and rocking on her knees while the shower ran cold.

Blue Suede Shoes: Excerpt 9

“Order whatever you want,” Ryan said, waiting for her to choose the salad, as did most of the girls he dated.
“Good, because I am starving!” Again, that’s what most of the girls said, he thought ruefully. So when the server reappeared, he allowed Clarissa to order for herself, not knowing which dressing she would choose.
“Well, I’ll have the house salad, with ranch,” Clarissa said, as Ryan rolled his eyes. “I’ll follow that up with the nine ounce sirloin, medium rare. The baked potato, loaded, with the seasonal veggies.” She smiled primly at Ryan’s shocked expression. “Oh, and don’t forget to bring the dessert tray by at the end.”
“Very good, miss.” If the server seemed surprised by her order, he kept his face neutral as he took Ryan’s order. “I’ll have the lady’s salad and your soup up immediately.”

He moved off, and Ryan looked at Clarissa. “You were expecting me to order a salad and the fat-free dressing?” It was her turn to surprise him, and she did, when she turned up the wattage on her grin. He was mesmerized by her blue eyes and the delicate, bare neck she exposed with her low neckline.
