Blue Suede Shoes: Excerpt 10

She seated herself and enjoyed the croissant and her scrambled egg whites. Eliza knew just how she liked things. After almost 18 years, Eliza could anticipate nearly her every move. She hadn’t asked for the breakfast, but Eliza just knew she would want something light after her swim.
When she reached her room 20 minutes later, she saw she had two messages on her phone. Clarissa started the shower and hit the speakerphone button, listening as she peeled off her wet swimsuit. Ryan’s voice poured out with excitement, his message upbeat and full of hope for little Scotty Martinez. She smiled, deleted the message and made a mental note to call him back later. Her hand froze on the phone when she heard the strange voice as the next message played automatically.
“Jessica…” the single word reminded her of a terrorizing scene from Silence of the Lambs. The heavy breathing paralyzed her, sending her mind spiraling back into her nightmares. It’s not possible. How could he find me? Twin snakes of fear twisted in her belly and sent chills racing over her naked body. When Eliza found her half an hour later, she was still clutching the phone and rocking on her knees while the shower ran cold.
